Amsterdam - Business & Economics

IES Abroad
Fall Semester, Full Academic Year, Spring Semester
Amsterdam, Netherlands (Map)

Imagine studying international business and global economics in beautiful Amsterdam, one of Europe’s leading cities for business and progressive social and economic policy. It’s also a hub for entrepreneurship and start-ups. With its central location in Europe and full-member status in the European Union, the Netherlands is the perfect place to study abroad and understand not only business and economics in the Netherlands, but across all of Europe—its significant trading partners are Germany, Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom.

What You'll Study

By enrolling in this program, you’ll have the unique opportunity to choose from a large variety of Business and Economics courses at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). Located in Amsterdam’s business district, the School of Economics & Business Administration has applied for AACSB accreditation and offers courses in Business Information Systems, Finance, International Business Law, Global Supply Chain Management, Organization Theory, and many other topics. You can also supplement your studies at the VU with an IES Abroad course taught at the Center in Art History, Art, Cultural Studies, Dutch, or Gender Studies.

Study Abroad Eligibility

All RIT students who study abroad must:

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (students with lower than a 2.5 GPA would be considered on a case-by-case basis)
  • Have a clear conduct record with RIT
  • Have no financial holds on your RIT eServices account at the time of your program acceptance/confirmation
  • Be an RIT matriculated student at the time of the program
  • Have a valid passport at the time of travel (that is valid at least 6 months beyond the dates of your travel)
  • Be able to obtain any necessary visa documents

You must also meet any eligibility requirements outlined by the affiliate study abroad provider you're applying through (including their GPA requirements).

Program Cost & Financial Aid
Most study abroad affiliate programs typically charge tuition (instead of your regular RIT tuition), a program fee to cover housing and program excursions, and out-of-pocket expenses such as your flight, food, and spending money.

After meeting with an RIT study abroad advisor, the RIT Education Abroad office will provide you with an official, detailed budget worksheet outlining the costs of the program(s) you're interested in. Once you receive the budget worksheet, you must take it to an appointment with your financial aid advisor to determine if/how your aid might apply.

You can see estimated program costs by visiting the affiliate provider's website for the program you're interested in. However, this does not include any RIT fees that may apply and does not include how your RIT aid and scholarships may apply. You must receive an official budget worksheet from the RIT Education Abroad office before meeting with RIT financial aid. More about funding study abroad

Before making any program commitments and paying any deposits, ensure you understand RIT's and your affiliate provider's withdrawal/cancellation/refund policies to fully understand your financial obligations and responsibilities.

Scholarships - Scholarship funding for study abroad is available!

  • Apply for scholarships through your affiliate program provider (Arcadia, CIS, CIEE, IES, SAI, etc) - they often have scholarship funding that is easy to apply for.
  • Other scholarships: National Study Abroad Scholarships; RIT Scholarships
  • Keep in mind that scholarship deadlines are often early, so it's best to investigate these at the start of your application process.

Class Registration & Grading

  • The Education Abroad office will register you at RIT for placeholder courses for the total number of credits you will be taking abroad on your affiliate program.
  • The RIT Education Abroad office will receive a transcript from your program with letter grades listed for each of the classes you take abroad (please note that this may be several months after your program ends). The Education Abroad office will then process those grades as either pass/not pass at RIT. A passing grade is C or above for affiliate study abroad courses. A C minus or below will be considered a not passing grade.

Additional considerations when applying for study abroad:

  • If you require Access Services support for this program, contact Angela Hauser (abhdis@ntid.rit.edu) to discuss your needs. Support is most often available for RIT Global Campus programs, RIT faculty-led programs, and short-term affiliate programs.
  • If you receive disability services support at RIT and would need support on your program abroad:
    1) Contact your Access Coordinator in the RIT DSO office;
    2) Share your Eligibility Letter in your RIT MyDSO portal that outlines the services you receive with your study abroad affiliate provider to find out what support would be available to you abroad (do this before you commit to the program).
If your affiliate provider requires you to submit additional paperwork/forms, please do so by their deadlines. It is important to remember that disability accommodations in other countries vary, and you may not be able to receive the same exact support you receive at RIT.
  • As with all international travel, we strongly encourage you to visit the U.S. Department of State website to learn more about risks associated with this location and recommended safety precautions prior to making a decision to participate.
  • Consider how you will manage your health and wellness while you are abroad: Health & Safety
  • Before you make any program commitments, understand how your host culture values your diverse characteristics such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Identity & Diversity Abroad

  • Email global@rit.edu with any questions about this program or study abroad.

To apply for this program, choose the term you want to apply for below to start an RIT Compass application and make an appointment to meet with study abroad advisor, Roseanne Hernandez (rit.edu/global/AdvisorMeeting). You will also need to start an application with the affiliate provider on their website.

Please note that you are limited to starting a maximum of three applications per term in the RIT Compass. After you reach your maximum of three applications for a single term, you will need to withdraw an application if you wish to start another one.

These programs are facilitated by RIT approved partner universities and organizations. Students can choose from programs with a variety of housing options, excursions, prices, courses, and levels of cultural immersion. Students will pay tuition as determined by the partner university. Students will be registered for place holder RIT courses that correspond with the classes they take abroad and when RIT receives the transcript from the affiliate, will assign those credits pass/fail grades.
